Just like a snap of a finger, Classic weekend 2009 has come and gone. I’m going to be jumping all over the place in this week’s column but then again what the hell else is new? I’m going to start off with what makes Classic weekend a special weekend. To me, the friends and comradery is what it’s all about. I’ve never had so much fun in the parking lot and campgrounds as I did this past weekend. On Friday night, my father and I ran into most of the Ohio contingent in the back parking lot before the races had started. We partied together the whole weekend. There were probably about 20 to 25 of us just drinking beers, eating Hoffman’s, and telling stories from past Classic weekends and just from racing in general. It’s funny because everyone pretty much parked in the same vicinity on Saturday and then Sunday so we could continue to party and spend time together. That was what this weekend is all about. It’s not about who wins or who loses; it’s about the time we get to spend with our friends and the time we get to spend making new friends and life lasting memories.

The column will be a little different this week as I’m going to be jumping all over the place this week. Hy-Miler weekend has come and gone and what a weekend it was indeed. Supermodified racing’s enemy Mother Nature didn’t make her presence felt this weekend! Fans from Canada and all across the United States towed in for the 32nd Annual ISMA Hy-Miler Supernationals. Friday night saw three Buckeyes on the podium as Randy Burch held off Dave Shullick Jr. and Charlie Schultz in the “Fast 40”. It was Burch’s first career ISMA win and a popular win indeed. It couldn’t have happened to a better person. The fans went crazy when he pulled into victory lane. You could sense the excitement and hear the thunderous roar from the grandstands. Randy has overcome a lot of tough luck over the last few years in the supermodified division and it’s just great to see him back in victory lane. He’s having a solid season so far and it’ll be interesting to see what happens from here on out for him.

PostHeaderIcon 32nd Annual ISMA Supernationals Hy-Miler Preview

The weekend we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. The ISMA Hy-Miler Supermodified Nationals takes place this weekend at Sandusky Speedway and you can bet your bottom dollar that the place is going to be packed. This race means more to me then any other racing. Classic definitely sits right in second. There’s nothing like seeing the track you grew up at packed with supermodifieds and people. There’s nothing like seeing 100 green flag action packed laps around a half-mile circle track. There’s nothing like the friends, partying, and comradery during the weekend. Every supermodified fan all across the United States and Canada comes together to make memories, tell supermodified stories, and make new friends on this weekend.  As I stated last week, this column is about the ten drivers that I believe have the best chances to pick up a win or two this weekend. I am happy to announce that I have been joined in my predictions by Kenny Hutchison, a long-time supermodified fan like myself. Kenny and I have become good friends these last few years and I’m happy to have his insight. Hope all you readers out there enjoy what’s about to come your way!

PostHeaderIcon King Schultz Inherits the Supermodified Throne

The following column is dedicated to a supermodified pilot from the Buckeye State. In 2005, “Chargin” Charlie Schultz was trying to make his first ISMA event which just happened to be the Friday night of Hy-Miler weekend. Charlie wasn’t able to transfer out of the heat races therefore putting him in the consi. I was sitting in the pit grandstands watching the race. Schultz worked his way into a transfer position in the consi. He wasn’t being pressured that much but he didn’t know that. The transfer spot wasn’t enough for Schultz and he wanted more. Misfortune struck for Schultz and he was a little aggressive and ended up getting collected with another car battling for a position. I was sitting up in the grandstands and a few drivers started laughing and asked one another “Who the hell does that guy think he is?” That was the jist of the conversation and it’s something that I’ll never forget as long as I live. I may not remember all the drivers up there who were laughing but two of them stood out to me. Schultz wasn’t able to make the show from the consi race. Charlie and I have been pretty close friends for about 5 to 6 years now, maybe longer. It doesn’t take a genius to see that in the past three years, the Lorain, Ohio native has matured into one of the elite supermodified drivers in the country.

After a winter hiatus, “Crashin with Crazy Chris” is back for the 2009 supermodified season.  This week’s article is going to be a little bit different from last year’s columns.  I’ve been thinking the last four days about how to go about writing this article on two of the greatest people in the supermodified community.  This past Saturday night, the PPG Vibrance Collection Midwest Supers took to Lorain County Speedway for a 40 lap feature event.  After it was all said and done, Randy Burch was back in victory lane in the ACME Racing 49.  This was his first win with ACME Racing and his fourth career supermodified win.  I was introduced to Randy and his wife Rhonda around 6 years ago at Sandusky Speedway.  I happened to talk to Rhonda during a week in June about building a website for them.  I met Randy at the track that week and then talked to Rhonda that night as well.  From that point on, these two special people became an instrumental and valuable part in my life.
