PostHeaderIcon Jedrzejek Hits the Hat Trick at Sandusky

msaby Chris Meyers

Sandusky, Ohio- During the last few years in MSA competition, Dave Shullick Jr. and Charlie Schultz dominated at Sandusky Speedway. After this weekend, another driver accomplished that feat. The first two MSA shows at Sandusky this year saw Timmy Jedrzejek put the Reed’s Salvage machine in victory lane. Jedrzejek continued his dominance by taking his third win at Sandusky this season.

Veteran hot shoes Randy Burch and Rich Reid brought the field of eighteen PPG Vibrance supers to the green flag with Reid taking the early lead. Caution would fall on lap three for Bobby Dawson who spun over the hill in turn one. Dawson was able to do a few 360’s and keep it going but was charged with the caution. By this point, Canadian Mark Sammut worked his way up to second from the sixth starting position. With five laps in the books, it was Reid, Sammut, Tim Jedrzejek, Charlie Schultz, and Burch. Jedrzejek impressively motored and navigated his way to the lead by passing both Sammut and Reid on lap seven. Sammut and Schultz would both maneuver by Reid for second and third respectively on lap ten.

PostHeaderIcon Nick Haygood takes ERA finale while Rich Castor Jr wins the Championship

eraby CNS

Saturday, September 19th marked the 2nd to last event of the year at Colorado National Speedway. It was the 35th annual Snap-On Tools challenge cup. Over one hundred drivers in 6 different division showed up. Modified Coupes, Super Modified, Figure 8s, Legends and Super Stocks hit the track for their last night of the 2009 season.

All of the ERA super mod guys delivered what was by far, one of their best races of the year at CNS. #11 Nick Haygood started dead last and spent the first 5 laps charging through the field to take 2nd behind #40 Harry Stone. Things changed for the top dogs when Paco Moralles’ #14 supermodified blew up. The field lined back up for a single file restart and it was a safe bet that Haygood would take over the lead. This was not the case. Stone took off on the restart, regaining his massive lead in an instant. With his eyes set on another win, Haygood steadily reeled in Harry Stone until the very last moment, finally passing him AT THE FINISH LINE for the win by about 6 inches. Haygood won the race, but Rich Castor Jr took 3rd place along with the season championship! Congrats to our winners Nick Haygood and Rich Castor Jr!

Official Finish:
1 #11 NICK HAYGOOD, 2 #40 HARRY STONE, 3 #2 RICH CASTOR J.R., 4 #8 LARRY LAPOINT, 5 #02 JOHNNY PICKARD, 6 #3 HJ EVANS, 7 #22 IRA CASTOR, 8 #51 JOE PRISELAC, 9 #15 JOSHUA LEWIS, 10 #29 MOORE CRAIG, 11 #26 BRIAN PACHECO, 12 #88 KEVIN DAY, 13 #52 SCOTT DECENICK, 14 #14 JOE GALLEGOS

PostHeaderIcon Gosek Steals MSA-Oswego Non Wing Thunder at Sandusky

by Chris Meyers

Sandusky, Ohio – No one knew what to expect heading into the first non-wing supermodified race at Sandusky Speedway in twenty-six years.  Many thought passing was going to be at a premium.  Two drivers proved that theory wrong.  By the end of the race, Oswego , New York native Joe Gosek proved them all wrong by winning from his tenth starting position.  MSA rookie hot shoe Trent Stephens started twelfth and finished right behind Gosek.

Randy Burch and Timmy Jedrzejek paced the field of twenty-three PPG Vibrance Collection non wing supers to the green flag.  A caution quickly flew for a tangle on the frontstretch between Lou Levea Sr. and Jimmy Paller.  Paller was done for the night with front end damage and Levea Sr. would restart later, several laps down.  As the race got underway, the top five was Jedrzejek, Burch, Gene Lee Gibson, Jack Smith, and Tim Ice. Jon Henes would go pitside for the night on lap three.  Smith would fall out of the top five when Schultz motored by on the same lap.  The yellow flew on lap seven for Tim Ice, who spun in turn three.  He would rejoin the field at the tail end.  The top five on the restart was Jedrzejek, Burch, Gibson, Charlie Schultz, and Joe Gosek.  The yellow flew on lap eight for Danny Shirey who came to a halt on the backstretch.  He also rejoined the field at the tail end.  At the completion of lap ten Burch had fallen from second to fifth.  The yellow flew again on lap ten for Jason Spaulding flying off turn three.  He rejoined tail. Levea Sr. would rejoin the field from his first lap crash. On the restart, the red flag flew in turn two for Johnny Torresee and Tim Ice who both hit the turn two wall.  Both drivers were okay, but their machines were done for the night.

The Classic featured  the SMRA Supermodifieds, and Madera Speedway’s 360 Supermodifieds. When the dance was finally over for the night, Troy Regier had won his third Madera SMRA feature of the year, and Kenny Kinchen had bested the 360 Supermod field.

PostHeaderIcon Classic 09 with Crazy Chris

crazychrisby Chris Meyers

Just like a snap of a finger, Classic weekend 2009 has come and gone. I’m going to be jumping all over the place in this week’s column but then again what the hell else is new? I’m going to start off with what makes Classic weekend a special weekend. To me, the friends and comradery is what it’s all about. I’ve never had so much fun in the parking lot and campgrounds as I did this past weekend. On Friday night, my father and I ran into most of the Ohio contingent in the back parking lot before the races had started. We partied together the whole weekend. There were probably about 20 to 25 of us just drinking beers, eating Hoffman’s, and telling stories from past Classic weekends and just from racing in general. It’s funny because everyone pretty much parked in the same vicinity on Saturday and then Sunday so we could continue to party and spend time together. That was what this weekend is all about. It’s not about who wins or who loses; it’s about the time we get to spend with our friends and the time we get to spend making new friends and life lasting memories.

PostHeaderIcon Otto Sitterly adds to his resume, winning Oswego’s Budweiser Classic

oswego

by Roury Williams / The Post-Standard

When Otto Sitterly won his third Oswego Speedway supermodified championship last month, he knew his resume lacked one major item. That changed on Sunday when he won his first Budweiser Classic 200 – a race that, as he put it, is the “creme de la creme” for supermodifieds.
Sitterly, of Cananjoharie, ran close behind pole-sitter and race leader Doug Didero, of Mooresville, N.C., for 159 laps before passing him on lap 160. He said he noticed that Didero’s car was getting loose in the turns, and he waited for the perfect opportunity.

PostHeaderIcon TIMMY J SMOKES THE OSWEGO BUD LIGHT SUPER NATIONALS FIELD

ismamsaby Carol Haynes

Oswego, NY – Independence, Ohio’s Timmy Jedrzejek won his second Oswego Speedway Bud Light Super Nationals Friday coming up through a tough, tough supermodified field. Jedrzejek, who had the fastest time trial of the 33 cars on hand, was inverted back to twelfth place starting spot for the 50-lapper. He faced 11 of the toughest competitors from the ISMA-MSA organizations ahead of him. Picking his way up through the field, he finally got by a strong-running Lou Cicconi in traffic on lap 35. Two more yellows before race end allowed the field a shot at him, but it never materialized. The win was his first Supernationals with the Craig Reed Racing 8 and his third overall winged Oswego win.

Timmy described his race. “The car was good. Obviously we set it up to be good by qualifying number one. But that puts you back in a tough spot back in twelfth. I think early on in the race I wasn’t quite sure what we had. I was trying to bide my time. The motor was close to overheating there at the end. I was just trying to make it through. It was a great race. I hope the fans enjoyed it. I know I certainly did.
